The Art of Holland and Ghent

Hilary Baker has sent a very interesting report on the recent tour of Holland and Ghent. It sounds as though a good time was had by all with a lot of art and the odd coffee and cake!                                 To read her report, click on the link below:

Tour to Ironbridge and Birmingham

On our way to Ironbridge we will visit Coventry Cathedral, then on Day 1 go to the Jackfield Tile Museum. We will be staying at the Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge.

On Tuesday we will visit more Museums in Ironbridge, ending with the Coalport Museum, where they painted China and fired it on the bank of the River Severn.

On Wednesday we head to Birminham to visit the Jewellery Quarter and then Winterbourne House in Edgbaston before heading home

We will visit The Royal Naval College, RHS Wisley, and there may be a chance for some of us to visit the Red House, here numbers and tickets are by The National Trust, who limit numbers and will not issue tickets till almost the day before

Italy of Piero de Francesca We still hope this may be possible

A tour of Italy in September 2020 with four nights in Citta di Castello and three in Spoleto. We shall explore Early Renaissance Art and Architecture. There will also be an opportunity for wine tasting and to enjoy the food and atmosphere of these beautiful corners of Tuscany and Umbria.

Bess of Hardwick Country

Retrace the steps of Bess of Hardwick, with a captivating tour of Derbyshire and the Peak District. Explore some of England’s most spectacular stately homes and enjoy miles of unspoilt lush valleys and moorland.

We will visit Chatsworth House and Gardens, the original home of Bess of Hardwick also the architecturally significant Hardwick Hall, which she created.

MALTA TOUR 2018

With its striking, honey-coloured stone set against the deepest Mediterraneum blues, Malta offers an eclectic mix of influences, whilst retaining a unique identity. The History of Malta is a long and colouful onedating back to the dawn of civilisation. The Islands went through a golden Neolithic period and later on the Romans, Arabs, Normans, French and English all left their traces. The Maltese Islandsare steeped in culture and heritage of great variety including magnificent architecture, sacred art treasures, remains of Roman Villas and traces of prehistoric Man.

We shall visit Valetta its fortress and Cathedral and the Fine Arts Museum. On day 2 we focus on Malta's temples, and on Day 3 visit Gozo. Day 4 Hal Saflieni Hypogeum prehistoic burial site and on Day 5 Malta's ancient Capital city, before our flight home. Full details and how to apply click here.

Our hotel is at the Rambla Bay Resort looking seewards towards Gozo. Seaview Rooms do carry a supplement. There are lovely gardens, two seasonal outdoor seawater pools and a private sandy beach. We shall be staying half board, so evening meals are included

This tour to Emilia-Romagna is based in Bologna, widely credited with being one of Italy’s best preserved and most attractive cities. As well as offering time to explore Bologna’s treasures, guided visits to Parma and Ferrara, cities renowned for their architecture and art treasures are included. And a highlight will be a day in Ravenna, renowned for its mosaics, once capital of the Byzantine Empire and home to no less than eight Christian Monuments that appear in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Emilia-Romana is an area of glorious countryside, and a free day included will offer the chance either to relax in Bologna, or to take one of the excellent local trains to other local centres of interest.

Travel will be by air with coach transport to the airport from Witney or Woodstock included.

Some Highlights of Art in East Sussex, based in Hastings
This will be a two night tour, staying in Rye and visiting Farley Farm. Cost will be ££299 single supplement £40. Full details under Us then Documents


On this tour we shall be visiting Parham House, then on to Hastings, which has the Jerwood gallery with some very good pictures including local artists. On to Farley Farm, which we heard about in the last lecture last year, the home of Roland Penrose and Lee Miller. On our way home a visit to Charleston, the country home of the Bloomsbury artists.

Houghton Hall
A once-in-a-lifetime chance to see Sir Robert Walpole’s Norfolk home in its original splendour. The major part of his magnificent picture collection, which was sold to Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg, is on show in the splendid staterooms. We stay the night in Norwich, and visit Cambridge on the way.
